Meet the PadCaster

Open house at the Manhattan Edit Workshop

What's your favorite edit? Josh Apter, Founder of Manhattan Edit Workshop, wants to know.

I stopped by the new home of Manhattan Edit Workshop on March 19 to take in an open house and to say hello. Located in the same building as Tekserve, a must know Mac shop for anyone using Apple computers, Mew was started in 2002 to provide training for Apple, Adobe, and other software for the creative and business community.  For students the Workshop is a unique way to continue their post production journey, whether as editors, color graders, after effect artists. It is also a wonderful way to meet others with a like interest in the technology and creative aspects of post production.

The open house was a busy meeting place for filmmakers and included over two hours of simultaneous training sessions in four classrooms, including explorations of Premiere, Smoke, Final Cut X, and Davinci Resolve. Before sitting in on the Resolve session I was reminded that one must stay on their toes when around Josh Apter, founder of MEW, and his crew - "So what's your favorite edit, Tom" I heard him say as I turned and faced the cool and useful Padcaster.  It's one of those brain freezing moments that you want to go perfectly - to jump up and quickly elucidate on the power of cinema editing. Of course nothing came to mind - as I sat there for what seemed like days. "Can I talk about a general editing style instead of a single edit?" Josh was kind and allowed it. I had just seen The Raid 2, the third film by a young martial arts director named Gareth Evans and had been pondering the way he elongates time through intercutting - and what a wonderful opportunity to discuss it!
